LASURECO awarded by NEA for Herculean efforts Posted on 2:38 AM by SPY SHADOW LASURECO General Manager, Sultan Ashary Maongco (Photo by Jong Cadion) MARAWI CITY - Perseverance is another word for success following the two years of remarkable efforts under the new management of the Lanao del Sur Electric Cooperative, Inc. (LASURECO) to transform the constantly poor performing cooperative, its consumers are now benefiting the improved reliable and efficient services it offers. These efforts were acknowledged by the National Electrification Administration (NEA). NEA is a state-run agency mandated to monitor the performance of the Rural Electric Cooperatives nationwide and during the EC Lumens Awards held on April 9, 2010 at Tagaytay Vista Hotel, Tagaytay City the five excellent performing electric cooperatives awards were given to LASURECO. The five awards namely Special Citation for Attaining 100% Barangay Energization; Special Citation for the Most Number of Barangays Energized for the Year, Model Headquarters Facilities Award (Mindanao), EC with the Highest Percentage Reduction in System Loss for the Year and EC with the Most Improved Corporate Image for 2009. LASURECO General Manager, Sultan Ashary Maongco, also took home a Commendation awarded to a General Manager for exceptional performance for having transformed a perennial ailing EC into a Powering Excellent EC. "We commend Team Lasureco for investing in enhancing the public image of the cooperative through institutionalization of member consumers, management restructuring, improved operational systems and procedures, excellent office layout and facilities and presentable officials and employees", said  NEA Administrator Edita S. Bueno. "Lasureco has contributed much in the successful implementation of the Rural Electrification Program in the country. With the energization of 142 barangays in 2009, the most by an electric cooperative in one year, it has attained the 100% barangay electrification level. The availability of electricity in the Lasureco coverage area will help ensure the socio-economic uplift and in the maintenance of smooth peace and order situation," the Administrator added. Team Lasureco took the challenge of rehabilitating the struggling EC. The team has employed strategies that included among others, teamwork, a holistic approach in the Integrated Rehabilitation Plan (IRP) designed to revitalize the coop for a period of three years and the organization of a Multi-Sectoral Interim Board of Directors composed of prominent personalities in the government, nongovernment organizations, traditional leaders and the academe, each representing a certain sector or organization or government official – all which resulted to the turnaround of the cooperative. Philippine National Police Provincial Director Senior Superintendent Orlando Benas said the PNP is looking at two possible causes of the blasts from improvised explosive devices (IEDs). No injuries or casualties were reported in the incidents. Benas said he received a text message suggesting that a certain Jamal, an alleged spokesperson for Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) commander Bravo was asking for a revolutionary tax. Meanwhile, two rival youth groups had been known to meet in Barangay Maranding, where the blasts happened, fueling suspicions the incidents could have stemmed from the rivalry. 35th Infantry Battalion Commanding Officer Colonel Ferdinand Rasalan said the first explosion happened on June 1, around 12:15 a.m., while the second happened on June 2 around 3:15 a.m. at the national highway near a gas station in the same village. Lanao Vice Mayor Renino Longcob told GMA News, "We are still waiting for the police to report on the incidents. Our town is enjoying a normal peace and order situation." Top of Form      Lala, Lanao del Norte – Two bombs exploded in two days where authorities believed to be an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and reported to have no casualties in Barangay Maranding this province.      PNP Provincial director P/SSupt Orlando Benas disclosed to GMANews.tv that the PNP is looking on the alleged extortion and personal grudge. He said that a text message was forwarded to him that a certain Jamal, an alleged spokesman of Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) commander Bravo is asking for a revolutionary tax. He added on a personal grudge, two young warring group threaten each other and meet in the area.     Commanding Officer of the 35th Infantry battalion (IB) Col Ferdinand Rasalan said that the first explosion was reported last June 1 at about 12:15 midnight near the house of Lily Pongase Y Nacario and on June 2, 2011 the other explosion was reported at about 3:15 at dawn and 20 meters away from the house of Pongase at the national highway near SEA OIL gas station in Barangay Maranding.       In an interview with Vice Mayor Renino Longcob, the Local Government Unit  (LGU)was confused after the reported bombing. 'We are still waiting for the police to report to us in our Sangguninag Bayan session what was the motive, suspects and the bomb used?, because our town is enjoying a normal peace and order condition",Longcob said     He added, the alleged bombing was an isolated case, business is usual with many investors want to venture in the area. Maranding is a commercial barangay of Lala where business center is located. Lanao del Norte coops oppose privazation of hydroelectric plants 05/30/2011/11:01 PM

TUBOD, Lanao del Norte — More than 65,000 power consumers in Lanao del Norte province strongly opposed the government's move to privatize two hydroelectric power plants which have a combined generating capacity of 980 megawatts and supply a majority of power in Mindanao. During the 35th Annual General Assembly and 39th founding anniversary of Lanao del Norte Electric Cooperative Inc. (LANECO) at the Mindanao Civic Center on Sunday, the collective passed a resolution urging President Benigno Aquino III to defer the sale of the Agus and Pulangui hydroelectric power plants in Mindanao. Section 47 of the Energy Power Industry Reform Act of 2001 (EPIRA) states that 10 years after the EPIRA has passed into law, power assets may already be sold to private investors. This means that the Agus and Pulangui hydroelectric plants may be privatized by June 2011. LANECO general manager Resnol Torres said that the 33 Mindanao electric cooperatives under the Association of Mindanao Rural Electric Cooperative (AMRECO), as well as other power sector coalitions, have been working to oppose the privatization of hydroelectric plants in Mindanao. Mindanao has the cheapest power rates as compared to Luzon and Visayas, making the country's second largest island very attractive to local and foreign investors, Torres said. In a Joint Congressional Power Committee forum held in Cagayan de Oro on May 13, Batanes Rep. Henidina Abad — who chairs the House Committee on Energy — and Senator Francis Escudero expressed their openness for another 10 years to defer the sale of Agus and Pulangui plants to private power investors, recognizing that their privatization could severely and directly affect ordinary power consumers. House energy committee vice chair and Iligan City Rep. Vicente Belmonte said that the lower house has already passed House Resolution 77 urging the Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management (PSALM) to defer the sale and privatization of the Agus and Pulangui Hydro Electric Power Plant complexes in Mindanao. Meanwhile, Agakhan Sharief, a member of a Local Monitoring Team representing the Moro Islamic Liberation Front in Marawi City and Lanao del Sur, said "I will refer this critical issue to the MILF Central Committee for discussion considering that Lake Lanao, which provides the power source in Mindanao, is within our ancestral domain." "Personally I am strongly opposed to the privatization move of [hydro electric power plants] which supply more than 50 percent of the power source in Mindanao," Shareif said. — MRT/VS, GMA News
